NOAH • Workstation console

MAXIMALdesign designed a duo-work post by order from NV Waterwegen & Zeekanaal for the central control of locks and bridges. NV Waterwegen & Zeekanaal is a Belgian company and manages all navigable waterways in the western and central part of Flanders.

The challenge of this design assignment was in developing a sober, durable and ergonomic concept with a ‘motivating atmosphere’ for the operators on the one hand and a promotion and image-reinforcing function for NV Waterwegen & Zeekanaal on the other.

Other important requirements were: setting-up and cabling ICT-equipment (12 video screens, 2 touch screens, 1 PC, marine telephone communication module, emergency stop, etc.), modular construction of the work post, assembly, maintenance and the environmental factors of the operational area in which the duo work posts are set-up (reflection of light, acoustics and view on the large overview screen).

The basic concept of ‘NOAH’ was developed to a great extent on the basis of an ergonomic study: physical, sensory and cognitive. The imagery is sober and contemporary with use of durable materials; only the wave-shaped tongue-and-groove rear wall of the work post is inspired by water and the shipbuilding industry.
