A new composite technology inspired by nature
‘Flemish Masters’ is an innovative project, by MoOD with partners Optimo and Fedustria, that brings together Flemish manufacturers of upholstery, furniture manufacturers and designers with innovative ideas.
CONCEPT
MAXIMALdesign formed a partnership with Nelen & Delbeke and Veldeman Bedding, which resulted in Folium® (meaning ‘leaf’ in Latin), a new composite technology inspired by nature and based on renewable materials. The integration of reinforced zones into the textile, results in a self-supporting, yet flexible, cover. Since the best solutions are often found in nature, the Folium® technology is based on the composition of leafs, where the soft surface is reinforced by a rigid structure.
This new technology has the potential to cause a revolution in upholstery. The resilient Folium® cover can be produced in a non-stop process. This results in a production process which is cheaper and less complex thus reducing the ecological footprint. DESIGN
Using Folium® technology a bed base was developed. ‘Nature inspired sleep’ is the idea behind this prototype. Conforming to all existing quality and comfort standards, the simplicity of the concept surpasses traditional bed manufacturing. Both the applied technology and the prototype were developed by Veldeman Bedding and textile manufacturer Nelen & Delbeke, designed and coordinated by MAXIMALdesign.
